The Eye Emergency Manual app is an initiative of the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI), part of the NSW Health Dept. They reached out to Getbusi after seeing our work on the Ophthalmic Pharmacopoeia app we developed with Sydney Eye Hospital.

The Eye emergency app is for medical, nursing and allied health staff in emergency departments and critical care, and for rural general practitioners. Clinicians can use the app to assist them in recognising and managing common eye emergencies. An expert working group provided input to the app, reaching consensus using the best available information.

For each of the presenting conditions, the app includes:

  • immediate action (if any)
  • history
  • examination
  • treatment
  • communication checklist(s)

Our approach

In order to get every medical detail correct we collaborated closely with ACI’s team of experts. This had a number of complex elements including:

  • A repeatable system for formatting the source medical literature and imagery into separate data formats for the iOS and Android apps.
  • An interactive Diagnostic Tree system.
  • Glossary functionality for inline terminology definitions across the app.
  • Support for tablets and smartphones.

Since launch the Eye Emergency app has become a mainstay both for practising clinicians, but also as a learning resource for medical students. Getbusi continues to maintain the app including periodic content updates from ACI to reflect the latest medical standards and procedures.
